Okay. I think pretty much all of my friends on here know me and know that I'm not a prude. I'm fairly open-minded. Easy to get along with. I like most things, even if it takes me awhile to get used to it.
Yet I'm left wondering if this book is the author's idea of a joke. I skimmed the reviews and I didn't see anyone else mention the things I noticed in this story. (With the exception of one reviewer mentioning the hamburger in passing.)
Sooooo, here goes.
The first thing I'll say is that the story itself, bypassing the parts I'll detail in a minute, is fine. Nothing to write home about but not awful either. The illustrations are the same. We listened to this on audio because I'm trying to introduce more audio books to both of us, and the narrator was good. She read well, did the voices well, I don't know much about narrators since audio books are pretty new to me still but I'd listen to her again.
On to the "exciting" parts now... stick with me here.
So, on page 12 we find an illustration of Minne and Moo standing up. (The first so far in the book where they're vertical.) Now, Moo is standing sideways and the reader - or looker as it is - can't see anything. But Minnie, dear, dear Minnie, is standing where we can see her front. Now, I'm no cow expert, let that be known, but I was unaware that a cow's udders looked like a penis and balls. The very word 'udders' is plural. Not singular. How many udders does a cow have? One? With a little ball sac underneath? And is this positioned right between the back legs, as if on a man? Because, ahem, that's how it's shown here.
Not a big deal you say? I agree. I just think it's strange, at least slightly distasteful and if nothing else it gives a child/children the wrong impression about cows and udders.
Now this part got to me more because it's more than slightly distasteful. Maybe I'm getting more sensitive in my old age.

FYI - I am reading these books for the first time as I explain in my review of Book #1. And I am reading them on audio versions read by Jim Dale.
I LOVED this volume. Book #1 was a solid 5 stars. Book #2 was slightly less loved by me so worth 4.5 stars. This one is worth 5 stars or more.
Why is this one the best so far?
1. I loved the humor in this volume. Several times I laughed out loud. A great example is shown by Harry's hilarious manipulation of his uncle when he explained the fact that his Godfather was alive and looking out for his well being:
"What's that?" he snarled, staring at the envelope Harry was still clutching in his hand. "If it's another form for me to sign, you've got another -"
"It's not," said Harry cheerfully. "It's a letter from my godfather."
"Godfather?" sputtered Uncle Vernon. "You haven't got a godfather!"
" Yes, I have," said Harry brightly. "He was my mum and dad's best friend. He's a convicted murderer, but he's broken out of wizard prison and he's on the run. He likes to keep in touch with me, though...keep up with my news...check if I'm happy...."
Or when Harry used the invisibility cloak to prank some of his enemies.
"The opportunity was too perfect to miss. Harry crept silently around behind Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle, bent down, and scooped a large handful of mud out of the path.
'We were just talking about your friend Hagrid,'
Malfoy said to Ron. 'Just trying to imagine what he's saying to the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures. D'you think he'll cry when they cut off his hippogriff's--'

2. I loved the lovely morals found in this volume.
"Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light."

I love prequels. I love the self-consciousness of them, how they play with reader knowledge and expectations. I didn't expect to like this one so much, and honestly, in itself it was really only a four. It was McKay's brilliant handling of this as a prequel to the Casson novels that bumped it to a five, that and how she made me finally like Caddy.
I've never cared for Caddy. She's sort of airheaded, in some ways like her mother Eve, but unlike Eve, I get the sense that Caddy is doing it on purpose. Caddy Ever After didn't do anything to change my impression, but then, how could it, since Caddy was practically Sir Not Appearing In This Book. Caddy's World is set six years before Saffy's Angel, the year that Rose is born and Caddy is twelve. It was strange to see Caddy, who previously seemed so free of connections, to be part of a tightly-knit gaggle of girls who've been friends since they were four and five. Unlike the other girls, who all have their own identities (i.e. Alison who hates everyone) Caddy's title "bravest of the brave" is in Caddy's mind an honorary title, since she isn't brave about anything but spiders, which to her aren't scary at all.
Caddy's braveness becomes evident, though, as she turns out to be the one who has to face reality for everyone else. Whether it's being the first of the friends to admit that their lives are changing, or telling her friends that they've all been dumped by their communal boyfriend, or facing the fact that her new baby sister may not survive, Caddy's bravery is something that's only obvious to everyone but herself. The most interesting example of this is when Caddy risks her own life to pull her friend Ruby out of the path of a speeding truck, because the true act of bravery is that she immediately pushes Ruby into the path of a metaphorical truck Ruby's avoided throughout the book, namely Ruby's admission to an elite school that will take her away from her friends. I liked this. I want to say that first off least my issues be construed as revulsion. I read this book with the idea of presented it to a children's book club that I run at work. If I were reading for myself I probably would have relaxed into the story more and not be questioning everything. I don't tend to read Juvie Fantasy too deeply when reading for my own personal pleasure, but I need to talk about this among a group.
First the tone seems to shift from the overly descriptive literary tone to a lighter faster pace once the adventure got going. Now most kids' books hit the ground running or get to the adventure quickly. One example of the flowery style that I liked was "The wind scratched its back along the side of the barn. The stars swung slowly across the roof of this world, and the grass swayed and grew, content to be the world's carpet but still desiring to be taller."(Wilson, 43)
Once the story really got going I was surprised at how disconnected things where. I know it is part of a series, but I guess I expected the first book to set up more of the rules. There are 100 Cupboards, the title said so, and we find out that each cupboard leads to a world. Yet, we never fully explore any of the worlds. We get tantalizing glimpse, but no full stories. There is an evil witch, but we don't really get her motivation. I was frustrated with that. It was a bit like we need a baddie so insert funky witch here.
I did like the dialogue and was surprised with mixed feelings at how true it seemed. What I mean about mixed feelings is for example the two old men were talking and used the phrase "Vietnam approach." While perfect for two old men, this book is aimed at 10 years -- if I had to guess. Now, I don't want to shortchange the cultural intelligence of your average 4th grader, but are they going to understand this tossed out in such an off handed manner? I will find out come book group. Saya tidak punya kenangan baik soal nenek saya. Dari 12 cucunya, mungkin saya yang paling nggak deket. Selain rumah saya yang paling jauh, dia juga lebih menyukai cucu lelaki yang cuma ada 2 (3 sebenernya, tapi yang 1 udah gede). Yang ada dalam memori saya saat kecil ya ketika dimarahi simbah pas lagi nonton tivi karena kepala saya menutupi pandangan (padahal sepupu saya yang lain, karena muka kami mirip), menyuruh saya membuat peti kayu, memasak, dsb. Rewel deh. Saya mungkin lebih menyukai sosok mbah kakung yang meskipun pendiam, dia tahu banget tentang saya. Ngajarin peer bahasa jawa, nganterin ke rumah sepupu yang jauh dengan mbonceng sepedanya, dan nganterin pulang ke rumah kalo pengin liburan di rumah mbah lebih lama. Tapi, setelah mbah kakung dan mbah putri nggak ada, ya rasanya beda aja. Saya ini tipe anak yang hobi dimarahin ternyata. Nggak ada yang marahin nggak seru. #eh

Disini, diceritakan bagaimana awal kehidupan Akihiro yang tinggal bersama ibunya di Hiroshima setelah ayahnya meninggal dan ibunya harus membanting tulang untuk kehidupan sehari-hari keluarga mereka. Lalu, ketika Akihiro yang semakin dewasa dan butuh perhatian lebih. Tinggal bersama nenek yang terakhir kali ditemuinya ketika masih kecil. Chris Priestley oldukca ilginc bir yazar bence, bana Neil Gaiman'i hatirlatiyor. Karanlik hayalgucuyle cocuklara yazdigi korkutucu oykuleri tam Gaiman tarzinda. Belki de bu yuzden merak ediyordum yazarin Dehset Hikayeleri serisini. Korku kitabi yazmak baslibasina bir istir zaten ama cocuklar icin korku oykuleri yazmak cok daha baska bir yerde. Ve bana sorsaniz hangisini tercih edersin diye dusunmeden "Cocuklarin icin" olanlari secerim. Cunku cocuklar canavarlari bizden daha iyi bilirler, daha iyi gorururler. Hayal gucleri her zaman bizden cok daha gelismis,bakis acilari ise daha farklidir. Edgar, kasvetli bir ormanin icinde eski bir evde yasayan amcasini ziyaret ediyor ve her ziyaretinde oldugu gibi amcasi bu seferinde de ona ilginc hikayeler anlatiyor.
Sominenin basinda, sicak bir fincan cay esliginde anlatilan bu hikayeler hic de sanildigi kadar siradan hikayeler degil. Bir cocuk icinde dehset diye adlandirilabilecek oykuler bunlar. Ama isin ilginc tarafi anlatilan her bir oykunun basrolu olan objelerin amcasinin koleksiyonunda bulunmasi. Edgar, zaman zaman amcasinin akil sagligindan suphelense de korkutucu oldugu kadar ilgi cekici olan hikayelerine devam etmesi icin onu tesvik ediyor taa ki... eh gerisini de siz okuyup ogrenin.
Neden bilmiyorum kendi kendime hep bu seri icerisinden en cok Montague Amca'yi sevecegimi soyleyip durmustum. Bir sekilde sadece kapagina bakarak bile bir cekim hissettigim bir kitapti. Cuando me habia enterado de Rafaela no puedo negar que no me haya sentido identificada con la trama de la historia: chica blogger que no se quiere a si misma por el peso que tiene. No habia pensado en leerlo pero cuando se me dio la oportunidad se lo pedi a SM para ver que onda.
Rafaela es una novela que no llega a pasar la pagina 200 pero nos somete a la historia de Rafaela y todo lo que le ocurre. La protagonista es como cualquier chica de 16 anos con amigas, con familiar, sale a bailar cada tanto; pero ella no se quiere a si misma: se compara todo el tiempo con su madre, hermana y sus amigas. Rafaela piensa que es fea, que nadie la va a querer.... Cabe decir que todas las chicas a esta edad pasamos por esta etapa, es algo totalmente comun.
Los chicos le agreden, le dicen cosas como "vaca", "gorda" y "fea"; a Rafaela le molesta, le hace sentir mal pero no hace nada para cambiarlo, ella tiene miedo de salir y mostrarse porque tiene el temor de que la sigan agrediendo. Hasta que tras un accidente, la protagonista pierde un arito (o pendiente) y un chico llamado Simon se lo devuelve.
Rafaela y Simon durante la historia van a intercambiar mails, se van a ir conociendo y quiza sentiran cosas el uno por el otro...
Para serles franca esta novela me ha decepcionado, yo creia que tenia un foco en un punto de vista mas adolescente, mas fuerte... pero esta dirigido a un publico un poco pre-adolescente (12-13 anos). Las actitudes de Rafaela son un tanto infantiles pero digamos que por el otro es entendible porque su personalidad es asi, por el otro yo me he detenido a pensar "Yo a esa edad no tenia esa misma actitud".
La trama de la novela es delicada y muy rapida, al ser una historia corta los sucesos tambien lo son pero esto no quiere decir de que estos no sean especiales. Lo que me gusto es que Mariana Furiasse se mete en la piel de esta chica de 16 anos y literalmente la escritura es como someterte en la cabeza de una chica asi.
Me senti en muchas identificada
